Saint Jerome

Bartolomeo Coriolano made prints for Guido Reni in a fruitful collaboration that lasted from 1627 until Reni’s death. The more established artist approved so highly of Coriolano’s intricate chiaroscuro woodcutting skills that in the end he asked him to reproduce 24 of his drawings. The nearby etching (1935.431) by Reni himself, which is monochromatic and more realistic due to its fine lines, demonstrates the contrasts between intaglio and relief prints.
