About the artwork
Artist supplied description.

Ugo da Carpi claimed to be the inventor of the technique of chiaroscuro woodcut, a medium that allowed artists to print solid areas of color or tone. Although chiaroscuro woodcut probably developed simultaneously in Germany, Ugo da Carpi was certainly the first Italian to use it and to demonstrate its potential for reproducing wash drawings.
