About the artwork
Artist supplied description.

While most of Whistler’s transfer lithographs were printed in black ink, he also made seven color images using the medium. The keystone drawing for this work—printed variously in gray, black, or brown—was made in London, and the model has been identified as one of the Pettigrew sisters.
