About the artwork
Artist supplied description.

These two prints (1939.251 and 1939.252) come from a triumphal series honoring Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I overseen by Albrecht Dürer; the massive project was produced from some 195 woodblocks. These two scenes of the emperor’s early military successes depict pikemen in action against mounted horsemen, with standard bearers carrying the Burgundian flag moving in with troops from the right. Maximilian died in 1519, just after this, his largest and most complicated work of propaganda on paper, was completed.
