About the artwork
Artist supplied description.
Though he was born in Lyons, France, de Boissieu always felt an affinity for Flemish and Dutch art. He made paintings and drawings, but he is best known for his vast corpus of etchings, in which his ability with portraiture and scenes of daily life distinguishes his work. In this self-portrait, he holds a profile portrait of his wife, Anne de la Roch, before tools of his trade and a classical bust of one of the sons in the ancient sculpture of the Laöcoon.
