About the artwork
Artist supplied description.

Bartholomeus Breenbergh was a painter of Roman ruins and religious and historical subjects. He lived in Rome for around 10 years beginning in 1619, and he founded the Netherlandish artist's fraternity there in 1623. He later returned to Amsterdam, married well, and, by 1644, he had switched from landscapes to more historical or literary subjects, which he depicted in large format etchings, such as this example.
