About the artwork
Artist supplied description.

The scintillating linework and complex compositions by the anonymous master from Zwolle helped elevate the stature of engraving as a unique artform. The balance of lights, darks, and delicate tonalities indicate he may have also been a painter.
With a flourish, the master depicts the emotional chaos of the Apostles’ last shared meal with Jesus, who sits calmly at the center. Judas is seen in the right foreground holding a bag of money, the payment he accepted to betray Jesus, behind his back. The Apostle next to him holds his nose, as Judas, in medieval descriptions, was so repulsive he exuded unpleasant odors.
