Landscape in the Style of Ancient Masters: Artist's commentary

    by Lan Ying

    Inscriptions

On the renwu day, I paid a respectful visit to the venerable elder Tanweng at Hanshang and had the opportunity to view a painted fan by Mr. Ji’ou. Its brushwork and ink were elegant and richly refined, while its rivers and valleys possessed a profound archaic spirit. Since antiquity, among men accomplished in letters, those who could also master the Six Principles of painting have necessarily depended upon innate heavenly talent, something that people like us have not been able to attain. I attach this and respectfully ask for your correction. When circumstances allow us to meet again, you will surely instruct me further. Written by the old man Diesou, Lan Ying. Artist's seals: 瑛, 田叔
