    Inscribed verso (possibly in Guercino's own hand), across bottom, in pen and brown ink: "Ricordo p[er] comprare un terzo unzio di [...] /oltra mare che sia bello e sopra il [...]/cotile p [er] lavorare in un rame piccolo/in un panno della Madona dal/ [...] R.A. Padre don Marcho da/ Venecia pro [vedi]dore di detto [...] in Santa Maria al Va [...] à Ferrara"; verso, upper center, on mount, in pen and brown ink: "Francesco Barbieri detto il Guercino"

    Dr. Benno Geiger (born 1882) Vienna. Charles Deering (1852–1927), Chicago [stamp (Lugt 516)]; by descent to his daughters, Mrs. Chauncey McCormick (née Marion Deering; 1886–1965), Chicago and Mrs. Richard Ely Danielson (née Barbara Deering; 1885–1957), Chicago; given to the Art Institute of Chicago, 1927.
