AT-00010783About the Artwork
Recent research has revealed that this plaquette—long characterized as an Italian object from the 1500s—is indeed by the hand of a 19th-century silversmith working in Vienna. The subject of the Renaissance-style object also cannot be precisely identified, although it was long associated with the beheading of Saint Paul.
Provenance
Dr. Jacob Hirsch (New York, New York) Bank Leu (Zurich, Switzerland) Mrs. Chester D. Tripp, by gift to the Cleveland Museum of Art, 1970.
