    Study of Hands

    by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres

Also known as: Studies of Hands and Study of a Foot (Studies for Windows in the Chapel of Saint Ferdinand, Paris)

    About the Artwork

This sheet of studies was made as a preparatory design for a series of stained glass windows for the Chapel of Saint Ferdinand in Paris. Here, Jean- Auguste-Dominique Ingres sketched four sets of hands that seem to cascade down the page in one rhythmic motion, masterfully illustrating the beauty of mise en page. In his use of graphite, Ingres alluded to the metalpoint drawings of Raphael, intentionally channeling the Renaissance master.

    Inscriptions

inscribed, at bottom left, in pencil: Ste [illegible]; middle right (beneath knuckles), in graphite: Ste Marguerite / d’Ecosse; upper left (beneath foot), in graphite: Clotild; upper left (between toes and wrist), in graphite: Clotild; stamped, at lower right, in black ink: Marc Bernheim [Lugt 3528]; in blue ink: the artist’s studio stamp [Lugt 1477]
