    About the Artwork

Among his contemporaries, Frank Wilcox was celebrated for his uniquely American style and themes of natural beauty, masculinity, and hard work. This freehand drawing exemplifies all three subjects: a lone man and his hunting dogs rest on a scenic overlook, contemplating the landscape that surrounds them. At a time when more of the North American continent was being settled and farmland turned into factories, this drawing asserted that the old American ideals of freedom and self-sustenance were still attainable.
